Nov. 19, 2009: The Supreme Court, sitting as a High Court of Justice, invalidates the law allowing the privatization of prisons because it contravenes Basic Law: Human Dignity and Liberty. In an 8-1 decision, the High Court annulled an amendment to the Prison Ordinance which would have allowed for the establishment of a private prison. Chief Justice D. Beinish noted that while the amendment's aim was to save state funds, it undermined the most fundamental constitutional rights.
