Israeli Government Announces $213 Million Fund to Upgrade Arab Economy and Infrastructure
In a March 21 communique , the Israeli Government announced a $213 million (800 million shekel) plan to develop economic opportunities, transportation and housing for Israel’s minority
communities. The program was crafted specifically to assist Israel’s Arab population and will focus on 12 Bedouin and Arab communities, comprising approximately 400,000 residents.
The plan will be implemented over a five-year period and is designed to assist the Arab sector through measures such as increasing individual incomes in the private and public sectors.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said of the plan, “The ensuing economic growth and the contribution to equality with other societal sectors, stand to transform the face of Israeli society,
and mirror my government's commitment to both growth and equality.”
Said Israeli Minister for Minority Affairs Avishai Braverman, “This is a goal-oriented plan that will address complex issues afflicting the designated communities, such as women's
employment, lack of public transportation and scarce housing.”
Funding for the plan will be allocated to four major areas of development. Of the $213 million, $58 million (220 million shekels) will be used to create jobs and job opportunities. Another $26
million (100 million shekels) will be invested in local and national transportation facilities to improve mobility in Arab-Israeli communities and connect them with the rest of the country.
A record $85 million (316 million shekels) will be allocated to construct 15,000 multi-storey residential units for Arab Israelis. Another $40 million (150 million shekels) is designated for a
“Violence-Free City” program to help improve civic services and strengthen ties between community and law enforcement.
